Best Makeup Looks for Medellín's Feria de las Flores

The Feria de las Flores is Medellín's most important cultural event and one of the most vibrant festivals in all of Colombia. For one week every August, the city transforms into an explosion of color, music, and tradition. The silleteros descend from the hills of Santa Elena carrying their elaborate flower-covered silletas on their backs, and the entire city dresses in celebration. For women attending the various events of the feria, makeup becomes a unique opportunity to express the joy and color that define this extraordinary festival.

Makeup looks for the Feria de las Flores should be bold yet sophisticated. Drawing inspiration from Colombia's native flowers, I love working with palettes that include vibrant oranges like those of orchids, deep fuchsias like bougainvilleas, golden yellows like sunflowers, and intense reds like Colombian roses. These colors applied as eyeshadows or creative liner looks create a visual impact that perfectly complements the festive atmosphere surrounding you.

One of the most requested looks during the feria is one that complements floral crowns. When a client plans to wear a flower crown, I adapt the makeup to harmonize with the blooms without competing against them. If the crown features pastel tones, I opt for soft makeup that emphasizes luminous, glowing skin. If the flowers are vibrant and bold, I can be more daring with lips in a red or fuchsia that echoes the crown, creating a cohesive head-to-toe look.

For the Desfile de Silleteros, the centerpiece parade of the feria, makeup needs to be especially resilient. The streets of Medellín fill with thousands of people, body heat adds to the tropical climate, and the hours of celebration stretch from morning well into the night. I use sealed layering techniques: primer, long-wear foundation, setting powder, and setting spray. Each layer dries completely before the next is applied, creating a barrier that withstands sweat and humidity throughout the festivities.

Lips are the absolute star of Feria de las Flores makeup looks. An intense Colombian red lipstick, applied with lip liner and set with translucent powder between layers, becomes the signature of the festive look. For those who prefer something more contemporary, fuchsia or coral lipsticks with a matte finish offer an alternative that pays homage to the floral palette of the Antioquia region while feeling modern and fresh.

The Feria de las Flores also includes evening events such as concerts, traditional tablados, and parties across different neighborhoods of Medellín. For these occasions, I suggest elevating the daytime look by adding biodegradable glitter to the eyelids or intense highlighter on the cheekbones. The transition from day to night can be as simple as intensifying the eyeliner and swapping gloss for a more dramatic matte lipstick.

The feria is also a perfect moment for makeup artists in Medellín to showcase their finest work. Every year I witness the level of creativity rise, with looks that incorporate artistic face painting, rhinestones, and three-dimensional elements inspired by the flowers themselves. My approach is always to find the balance between creative expression and wearability, creating looks that are Instagram-worthy while still allowing the person to comfortably enjoy every moment of the celebration.
